Musik der wogen
(Music of the Waves)
for soprano & piano (2016)
duration 20 minutes
premiere 22nd January 2017 by Frederikke Kampmann and Marcin Kozel at the Wiener Kameroper, Vienna
score available from Donemus
program
Composed for the Danish soprano, Frederikke Kampmann, Musik Der Wogen (Music of the Waves) is written to the words of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. At once tempestuous, intimate and longing, the music explores the many sides, both light and dark, that co-exist within this seemingly innocent fairytale.
I was shocked when I actually read the original. Best remembering the Disney version of my youth, it was a far darker and depressing tale than expected. Here, The Little Mermaid, who remains unnamed throughout, endures inner and outer torture in order to be with the one she loves as she seeks her way to an immortal soul.
We get no happy ending...only one of life dissolving as foam on the sea and dreams in the wind.
