Strata
for solo clarinet (2015)
duration 8 minutes
premiere 6th April 2016 by Søren-Filip Hansen at the Concert Hall of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen
program
My piece for solo clarinet, Strata, takes its name from the layers that unfold in the music. These layers form textures that expand and contract, flowing harmonies that sweep through the clarinet's range and melodious passages, evolving from aggressive fanfare to quiet introversion. Throughout the piece, these musical elements combine and interact in myriad ways, aimed at creating multi-layered music from a single-note instrument.
The thematic material in the piece is searched for throughout, glimpsed briefly through the musical haze as melodic fragments soar above and below a flow of background activity. Gradually the melody becomes more and more fulfilled and, as the piece's ending is approached, the drama relaxes and gives way to a lyrical finish.
